William Russell and Hester Callanan were born in 1795 and 1803 respectively, the exact date and place of birth are not known. They were married at Carrigrohane, Cork, Ireland on 02 September 1827. They departed for Australia from Liverpool, England on 27 June 1832 on the brig Mail, arriving at Hobart Town on 12 November 1832. George Rowett Russell was born at sea off the west coast of NW Africa. For a number of years, William Russell was employed as a schoolmaster by the Board of Education at Sandy Bay, Brown's River and in other parts of the island including Illawarra near Launceston. He subsequently held a position for some years in the State Customs Department at Hobart. For more than 18 years he lived in retirement at 73 Lansdowne Crescent, West Hobart where he died at the of 88 years on 23 March 1884. Hester Russell died at the same residence at the age of 88 years on the 21 February 1891. There were ten children to their marriage. |
