Distressing News
Colonial Times, 20 Oct
1828
The distressing circumstances, under
which the Family of the late Captain Laughton have been deprived of
a Husband and a Father, are respectfully submitted to the Public.
Captain Laughton purchased the wreck of the Hope on
Wednesday last, 15th October, 1828. On the evening of the same day,
he proceeded down the River to save all that was practicable of the
property. On the morning of yesterday, while examining the state of
the wreck in a boat with Captain Cunningham, the boat was struck by
a sea, and filled with water. Captain Laughton and Captain
Cunningham jumped out of the boat, but by the violence of the surf,
Captain Laughton was prevented from reaching the land, and
ultimately drowned.
When it is remembered that the deceased had nearly lost the whole
of his property by the wreck of the Apollo, and that while
suffering under their former misfortune, that family have been
visited with this afflictive dispensation of Providence, it is
confidently anticipated that this plain statement of these
melancholy circumstances, will induce the Public to come forward
with their accustomed liberality in aid of the widow and children.
The Undersigned will wait on the Inhabitants to solicit
Subscriptions for that purpose.
W. Bedford H. W. Mason,
W. A. Bethune J. Grant.
Subscriptions will be received at the Bank, in the name of Messrs.
W. A. Bethune, H. W. Mason and James Grant, Treasurers.
N.B. - If any of the Inhabitants have not been waited on, it is
hoped they will not attribute it to neglect, and they, as well as
those happened to be from home when called on, are kindly invited to
add their names to the List, and to pay their Subscriptions at the
Bank of Van Diemen’s Land.
