ALFORD, Charles: Arrived Dec 1830 on ship The Resource Hobart Town. Can anyone tell me why he went to Tas? He arrived as far as l know a free man. I have him after 1839 but nothing between 1830 and 1839 where did he work where did he came from or what made him go to Tas? Many thanks for any help. Dianne Berry

ALOMES, Ida Annie: Born 30 July 1884 Clarence district, Tasmania. Daughter of Robert Henry Alomes and wife Eleanor Pedder. Died aged 18 years on 5 June 1902 (of the illness consumption) at North Motton, Tas. Buried in St. John's Anglican cemetery North Motton (no headstone, but next to brother Raymond). Carol Axton
ALOMES, Raymond Charles: Born 8 Feb 1872 Clarence district, Tasmania. Son of Robert Alomes and wife Eleanor Pedder. Died 12 Jan 1902, aged 30 years, following an illness. AUSTIN, Reubin William: My great grandfather, born 21 Jan 1841 in Alysham/Cawston, Norfolk, England. Came to Tasmania on the Dunorlan 2 in Mar 1859. I am trying to locate details of his siblings Mary Anne, Alice and Herbert. Mary Anne died around 1890, Alice married in England and Herbert was a stonemason from Oxfordshire. Their father was Abel and mother Sarah DYER. Brian Austin

AYERS, Nathaniel: (~1791-1817) Arrived Hobart as supracargo on brig Brutus; Clerk to the Lieutenant Governor’s Court; Clerk to Deputy Judge Advocate; Farmer at Pittwater; Merchant.  Married Mariah NASH (1796-1881) in 1813 and had three children. John Hammond

AYLWARD, Thomas Augustus: Born 1855 Hobart, Tas. Father was Warden, Penal Settlement. As young man went to New Zealand joined Mounted Police in Invercargill in 1880. Married  Jane Ladds WARREN in 1891 in Strahan, Tasmania where three daughters were born - Aileen Ruby born 1891, Edith Kathleen born 1893 (my grandmother), Vivienne Beatrice Jane born 1894. Thomas died in 1951, Wellington, age 96 years New Zealand & Jane died in 1925 Gisborne, New Zealand, age 72 years. Alan Horsefield

BARKER, Richard (Esq): Born c1780, Dublin. Married Frances Louisa CAWTHORN c1810, London(?). Emigrated to Sydney per Willerby in 1816 with wife and 3 sons. 1,000 acre land grant from Governor MacQuarie for New Norfolk. Arrived Hobart Oct 1816 per Spring. Had ten children altogether - Richard jnr, George, Henry Kitchen, Arthur, Edwin, Charles, Louisa, William, Emma & Francis. A Justice of the Peace and a business partner of Anthony Fenn Kemp. Resided in Hobart until taking up grant at New Norfolk in the 1820's. A pioneer settler of Van Diemen's Land. Died 1857 from a drowning accident. Would love to hear from any other descendants, or those descended from the servants or convict labourers he hired. Catriona Barker

BEARD, John: Transported on the Prince Regent 1840 from Bedfordshire, England. Married Jemima BATH in April 1840. She was transported on the Hindostan. Settled in Oatlands. Robin Carter

BECKER: George Gottfried and family arrived in Tasmania per America in 1855, from Hessen, Frankfurt on Maine, Germany. His wife, Katharina WOLF, and sons - Phillip (married Mary Elizabeth DAKIN/DEAKIN 1867); Balthasar/Joseph (married Mary Anne SLATTER 1869); August (married Elizabeth Frances WOODBERRY 1874) and Gottfried (married Sarah WALKER in 1870), accompanied them. Mary Phillipina Becker, born  1856 at Falmouth, married  Henry WOODBERRY in 1875. BENNETT, Susanna: Susanna was my g-g-grandmother's. She married John FLANAGAN on 10 Dec 1894 and had the following children - Edward, Melvie, Sylvia, Doris, Kathleen and Lyall. They lived at the Don. Mary was 76 when she died in 1947. Maureen Hodge

BEZZANT, Walter Leslie: Born 1884 at Sorell,  father George ROCKLIFFE, mother Ellen DESMOND. Married Ellen Amelia FERGUSON, widow of Alexander Ferguson, Orford. Lived at 'Frogmore' Penna, Sorell, Tasmania. Moved to 274 Brisbane St, Launceston, where Ellen died in 1938. Judy Crowley

BLAIR, Alexander Thomas Barrett: Alexander was born in England 1818 and died Launceston Tasmania 1900.  He married Mary Ann HEDINGTON born Jun 1822. Married 22 Feb 1841, Launceston. Mary died 1910, Launceston. Alexander was a shipwright built Tamar Maid. They lived French Street, Launceston. Alexander arrived Sydney on the Samuel Cunard in 1839. They had 12 children. BLAKE, Robert: Convicted in 1831 of "machine breaking" at Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire and transported on the Eliza that year. He married Mary BOWDEN 1835 in Bothwell, daughter of convict Edward BOWDEN (baptised as BUNNETT). Their children Louisa, Maria, Mary Annie, Isaac, Charles, Joseph, Eleanor, Robert Edward, George, William Jonathon, Alfred James and Eliza Harriett all survived and married. Malcolm Ward
(de) BOMFORD: Isaac BOMFORD lived in Trim, County Meath, Ireland pre 1833. Mainly Northern Tasmania. 1833+. I strongly suspect along with other researchers that my BOMFORD’s are descended from Colonel Laurence BOMFORD (~1617 to 1720) as appears in "Burkes Irish Family Records", 5th Edition, 1976, London, Burkes Peerage Limited, page 152-5 and to Peter Bamford's "The Bomford Family and Allied Families". BOWATER, Daniel: Born c1817 Birmingham UK. Convicted and transported in 1837 to VDL.  Married to Bridget NOWLAN, Rebecca COLLINS, Elizabeth BETTS, Emma EVANS. BOWDEN (alias BUNNETT), Edward: Convicted at Little Walsingham, Norfolk in 1826 for fowl stealing and transported on the Governor Ready in 1827.  He was baptised Edward BUNNETT but apparently adopted his mother's maiden name after a prior conviction.  He married Diana AYRES in 1816 at Shropham, Norfolk. Diana and 5 children emigrated in 1830 and they had 3 more children at Bothwell, where they settled. The Bowden family still lives in the district. Malcolm Ward
BRADSHAW, John & Annie JAMES: I am searching for any information I can get on John Bradshaw and Annie James. The only information I have is that they spent some time in Tasmania where they had at least one son in 1860, James Algernon Hay Bradshaw. James came to Victoria at the age of ten where he went on to marry Phillis Louisa Smith in Kyneton Victoria. John and Annie are my g-g-grandparents, apparently they divorced and Annie returned to Ireland. I would love to be able to find some information because at the moment I have hit a brick wall. BRENNAN, Patrick: Born c1823 Athlone, Ireland. Convicted of killing cattle with intent to steal and sentenced to 10 years transportation in 1852 on Lord Auckland with his brother Charles. Married Mary BARRY (daughter of fellow convict Patrick BARRY) 1861 in Hobart Tas. They had seven children - Bernard, Patrick, William, John, Catherine, Mary and Michael. Karen Jones
BROUGHTON, Thomas: Convicted 13 Oct 1834 at Herts Assizes. Sentence 7 years for stealing pidgeons with William Pointon and William Franklin. Transported from the Downs per Aurora. Arrived Hobart 8 Oct 1835. Native place Chesterton Hunts (not Chesterfield as stated in conduct record.) Wife Mary Broughton and 7 children living at Peterborough Northants. Free Certificate 1846. Assigned to Hobart/ Bromley/ Bridgewater and Launceston. Liz Robinson

BUGG, Jonathan: Born c1819 Layham, Suffolk England married Anna Maria KING and migrated to Tasmania in 1860 on Indianna. They had 14 children, the first 11 were born in England - Joseph, Mary Ann, Robert, Samuel, Sarah, Drucilla, Jonathan, James, Philip, Charles, Ellis, William, Eliza and Betsy. The family lived in the district of Emu Bay. Karen Jones

BULLOCK, William and Elizabeth: Arrived Launceston 1833 on Countess of Dunmore. They lived in George St, Westbury in 1848. William was a watchman at the Tamar Bank. He sailed to Victoria on Sea Witch in 1852 with his two sons William Thomas and Andrew. No record of William Snr and son Andrew have been found since 1852 - am seeking any information about their lives in Tasmania and Victoria. Jeff Dowling

BUMPSTEAD, Elizabeth:  Transported 7 years per Mellish in 1830 for stealing drinking pots. She was transported with 5 of her 6 children Mary Ann, Caroline, Elizabeth, George and Sarah. Other child William was transported for life per Mary in 1830, all to Hobart. George was later convicted of stealing brass brushes, died in custody 1852 after a (visitation of god). Elizabeth Bumpstead died in Hobart in 1853. Spencer G Jones

BURDEN Thomas: Born c1797 Wilcot, Wiltshire, England.  Thomas was transported in the ship Palmyra after having been found guilty of stealing a lamb.  He resided in the Bream Creek area of Tasmania after completing his sentence and was joined by two of his sons (William & John) and their families who emigrated in 1854. BURN, David: 1798-1875. Playwright, author and composer. Narrator of “Narrative of the Overland Journey of Sir John and Lady Franklin and Party”. Emigrated to Tasmania from Leith, UK. More information regarding his family would be appreciated. Jenn Davies

BURNEY/BIRNEY, Edward: Transported on ship Eden to Tasmania arriving July 1842. ? age 19. Married Ellen KAVANAGH c1861 in Bothwell, Tasmania. Children – William, Anastasia, Lyons (Laurence my ggt grandfather), Patrick, Mary, James, Thomas. Looking for any additional information on this family, especially Edward and Ellen’s parents. CAMPBELL, William:  Transported on the Isabella from Leith in Scotland for forgery. Sentenced to life. Arrived in Tasmania in 1836. Wife Jane (nee JOHNSTON) and sons William, Robert and John arrived around 1846. Further children, Annie, Cecelia, Jane, James, Henry and Clementine born between 1837 and 1847.  William was a convict on the Loan Gang in Campbell Town and then moved to Hobart. After receiving his Pardon, the family moved to Brunswick in Melbourne. CARSWELL, Alexander: The third child & third son of Allan CARSWELL & Agnes HOWIE, born at the farm Craig of Neilston, Renfrewshire, Scotland  on 2 June 1783. Said to have died in Van Diemen's Land. John Carswell
CHAFEY, Thomas: Convicted and transported 2nd fleet arrived Sydney 1790 per Scarborough. Eleven days later transported to Norfolk Island. Common Law wife Maria ISRAEL transported 2nd fleet per Lady Juliana, also transported to N.I. Came to Tasmania c1809 with ? 4 children, 2 more born Tasmania. Pardoned 1839. Thomas gifted his land to his son William (Sandy Bay ? Coffeys' Point) William built a hotel called Travellers Rest. Interested in children, births deaths marriages. Kay Smith

Children to James & Mary - all born Spring Bay, Tasmania - James  1871, Mary Anne 1872, William 1874, Sarah 1876-1876, Mabel Winifred 1877-1960 married William Anthony Lavell 1900, Lavina Jane 1882, Henry Allen 1884-1884, Amy Madeline 1886, George Allen 1888, Ernest Graham b1894-1952 married Ethal Mannie divorces 1935(their child was Earl Vane Claridge) Married Clarice Elaine Roberts between 1935-1939 (their children- Elaine Mary, William, Brian, Kenneth), Eleanor Gladys 1897-1898, Lydia Gladis 1899 ( Father Claridge unknown). CLARK, Mary Ann: (1860-1943) married William RILEY (1853-1936) on 20 Jan 1881.  Their children were William Riley (1881-1950) - my gr grandfather, Leslie, Charles, Ruby (my grandmother - married Joseph Nevin MacGregor in 1907), Vera, Albert Victor, Blanche and ? CLARKE, William: Born c1816 married Emily PERRY, born c1834, in 1853 at Hobart. They had nine daughters - Emily, Elizabeth, Fanny, Ellen, Harriett, Laura, Harriett, Female and Ada. They settled in the Huon district with William dying in 1890 and Emily in 1892. Emily married Richard STANTON and they are my great, great, grandparents. Jennie Chapman

CLEMENTS, George: Per Argyle in 1831 from London to Hobart for 14 years. Married Elizabeth BUMPSTEAD in 1842, daughter of female convict Elizabeth Bumpstead per Mellish 1830. Daughters - Caroline 1844 and Elizabeth 1847. George Clements was a successful confectioner also active in abstinence society in Hobart to 1855. Mentioned many times in newspapers of the day (not to be confused with similar named - a butcher. Then moved to New Zealand. He died 10 July, 1887 in Auckland. Spencer G Jones

CLEMINSON, John: Came to Tasmania on the Convict ship Oriental Queen, sailing from Plymouth in 1852 and arriving in Hobart in 1853. He applied for permission to marry and married Margaret MOLLOY in 1855. Margaret arrived into Hobart from Dublin on the Convict ship Martin Luther leaving Dublin 1852 and arriving into Hobart 1852. COLLIS, John: Born 16 Jul 1837 in Campbell Town, Tasmania. Father's name William COLLIS, mother Mary FLANDERS. They had a daughter Eliza Ann born 16 Jun 1835 and another son James born 15 Jul 1839 and died aged 6 months. I know nothing more about their lives in Tasmania. John was married in Bendigo, Australia 29 October 1870.  John is my husbands great grandfather.  More information about this family and where they came from is what I am searching for. Helen Milton

CONWAY, Charles, Esq: Born 1820 in Tyrone, Ireland. Came to Hamilton Tasmania and married a Jane TAGART (TAGGART) in 1854. They had a daughter Mary Ann in 1854.Charles was last heard of in Mitcham, Victoria. John Hills
COONEY, James: Born bet 1844-1849 Ireland, UK. Married Henrietta Florence SHEARN on 24 Aug 1871 at Evandale, Tasmania.  Had 12 children - Mary, Ellen Isabel (Nell), Sarah, Edward John (Ted), William James, Thomas (Tom), Albert Arthur, Charles Henry, Herbert George (George), Laura Annie, Jessie Victoria & William Ignatias. Information or photos on descendants appreciated.  Julie Henderson
COPELAND, Peter: Born London late 1700. Went to Hobart, owned pubs Jolly Sailor in 1825 and Lord Wellington in 1828. Married Jane HANGAN (ex Heels, nee Elliot). Peter is my g-g-g-grandfather. Would like to know more about the Copelands please. Deborah Frank
COTTON, Eudora Matilda: Married George FAULKNER 25 Oct 1870 at the Independent Chapel, Tamar St,  Launceston. A witness on their certificate was Rufus cotton. They had ten children - Keziah, Arthur, Eva, Walter, Henry, Amy, Herbert, Emma, Walter, Madeline, Bertha. Eudorah was also known as Dorah while married and her death notice listed her name as Eudorah Matilda. She died 3 May 1935 at her residence 77 Canning St, Launceston. DAVIS, Henry Thomas:  Born Campbell Town or Oatlands 1842. Mother, Catherine Ann Judge - Father, Henry Thomas Davis. Di Herbert

DEAN, William: Transported to Tasmania, 1842, 14 yrs.  He married Jane CRAWFORD, Launceston 1851 Children, John, Mary, Sarah, Ann, Emily, Thomas, Martha, Annie, William, Jane (died 5 weeks old).  Jane died in childbirth 1870.  He was licensee, Market House Tavern Hotel, Longford 1859 – 1860 and Northern Hotel, Longford 1862 – 1865. He died in Collingwood, Melbourne 1885 and is buried in the Melbourne cemetery. Judy Dean

DOWLING, Edward: Born Chew Magna, Somerset, 1838. Arrived Hobart, Tasmania in 1856, worked for W J T Clarke. Married Anne CLARKE (daughter of Lewis Clarke), Essendon 1862. Had Bullock Creek Station, near Bendigo, Victoria, 1865-1871. Farmed near Ross, Tasmania from the 1870s until his death in 1922. Leigh McKinnon
DRADDY, Honorah: Born 1822 in Cork, Ireland. Arrived as a bounty immigrant on board the Royal Sovereign in 1843. Honorah married Robert EUSTACE 25 April 1844 at Launceston, Tasmania. They had 6 children - Emily, Martha, John, Robert, Eliza & Rebecca. Robert died 1883 at Latrobe, Tasmania. Honorah died 1899 at Waratah, Tasmania. Leone Fabre
DUNCOMBE, John - Born 1772 in Cripplegate, England. Indicted 26 Sep 1787 for stealing 210 yards of everlasting [cloth].  Found guilty and transported for 7 years. Arrived in Sydney on the Albermarle, which was part of the Third Fleet in 1791. Transferred to Norfolk Island on the Atlantic and remained there as a carpenter after his sentence expired. John married Elizabeth HAMBLEY on 27 Jun 1808 in Hobart. John became deranged and was sent to an asylum in Sydney in Sep 1819. He was admitted to the Benevolent Society on 24  Sep 1827 and listed in the 1828 Census aged 57 years. DUNIAM, Hubert: I am the g-grandson of Hubert Duniam, the first principal of the original State School at Circular Head, appointed in 1854. Hubert was born in Teignmouth, England in 1801. Married Phoebe MORDAUNT, 1 Mar 1838 in Launceston. Family generally settled on NW Coast. Geoffrey Duniam
